The Room Xchange is an online platform that connects busy households with a spare room in their house with Guests who are willing to provide a couple of hours of help around the house each day in Xchange for food and accommodation.
Before you begin, please be mindful that we are an inclusive company. This means that our team, our Hosts and Guests commit to the acceptance of people from all walks of life regardless of race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation or age. If you cannot commit to this, then we are not the right fit for you.
It will take you approximately 20 minutes to fill out your profile. You can save and continue as you go enabling you to come back to it at a later time.
There is no money that is Xchanged between the Hosts and Guests. There is a small fee for our users to use our platform. There is a once off admin fee of $99 when you confirm your first Xchange and then an ongoing fee of $2 a day for the duration of your stay paid 30 days in advance on a recurring payment.
The average Xchange is around 3 months. This is a mid to long term accommodation platform with the view that you will be staying for a while as you would if you were renting.
Being involved in The Room Xchange means you'll be living with people. There are many facets to human beings which means at times there may be disagreements. In the beginning of your Xchange, whether you're a host or guest, we suggest you set up a weekly meeting so you can discuss any matters that may arise. Think of it in the same way you would if you had a new housemate/flatmate. If you have an open dialogue and share the things that annoy or upset you when they occur, they won't turn into big issues. However, if this doesn't work and you feel you've done everything you can to communicate your concerns and feeling, then please send us an email explaining your situation to email@example.com and we will make every effort to help you come to an amicable solution. Worst case scenario, you can end your Xchange. If any matter becomes urgent and you need specific attention, then please call our office on 1300 880 101. BTW you are always welcome to call us as a first point of call, but it's always better for your Xchange experience, if you can discuss and resolve your concerns amicably.
Yes. We have a $10 million public and products liability insurance policy for all our users as long as the booking is made through our system. If you choose to book an Xchange off our system, then our insurance policy will not cover you. Please refer to our Marketplace Terms and Conditions for more information.
Trust is really important to us and we know that it is really important to our Hosts and Guests as well. Therefore we have a few things we will require from both Hosts and Guests to verify who you are. We have partnered with Digital iD, a product from Australia Post, that allows us to verify all our users online in an instant. We have also partnered with CV Check where you can apply for a Police Check which will reassure the person you're Xchanging with that you're a safe and reliable person.
We have registrations in almost 40 countries, so the answer is... very, very soon. Right now, we are only Xchanging in Australia and New Zealand for Hosts. If you're a Guest you can be from anywhere in the world and stay with Hosts in Australia and New Zealand. To be a Host in another country, you'll have to wait a little bit, but it's not too far away:)
Both the Host and the Guest decide if they'd like to Xchange. It's a mutually beneficial arrangement and as such should be made by both parties.

If you're seeing any error messages when submitting your sign up form, it's because there is either some information missing or you've added the information incorrectly. Because the information in our registration form is tied to our verification process, all information has to be added correctly.
At this point our Xchanges are a minimum of one month. More often than not a Guest is looking to live somewhere and a Host is looking for the stability of someone long term.
Once you've applied for your Digital iD, our verification process by Australia Post, you'll automatically get a Digital iD badge show up on your profile.
If you are looking for an affordable way to live, that allows you to live the life you want, without the high cost of living attached, then you'd be an ideal Guest.
The type of work are general household chores such as cleaning, cooking, tidying up, laundry, errands, grocery shopping, basic gardening, child care etc. When creating your profile you have the opportunity to say what you'd be willing to do for your Host. The more you're willing to do, the better your chances of finding a successful Xchange. Hosts will also state what they require of their Guests in their profiles which enables both parties to find the ideal Xchange. It's important that you're clear about this in your profile, as Hosts will decide to connect with you based on what you state you're willing to do.

It's just a matter of having a conversation and letting them know that their expectations are beyond what you're agreement started at. If you have a weekly meeting with your host to check in and talk about how things are going, then you'll find the relationship will run more smoothly and the expectations can be met. However, if you find that it's not helping and nothing changes, then you can simply cancel the Xchange.
We'd love for couples to Xchange but we're not geared up for it right now. However, that will change really soon, so make sure you create your profile with the request for Xchanging as a couple and when we're ready we'll let you know via our email updates.
You have to be at least 18 years of age to use our platform. In terms of the oldest you can be, well, that's up to you. As long as you're fit and able to help someone in their home.
We've never found this to be an issue, but it's a good idea to ask the Host when you begin connecting with them. It's a reasonable request.
An ideal Host has many facets. Some like to Host because it's in their nature to want to share their home and their lives. If you're a person who is very private and likes their own space, then Hosting isn't for you. Think of it as a similar experience to having a house mate. You share your lives, your home and become friends. If this resonates with you, then you'd be an ideal Host.
Start with creating a 'to do list' of things of the things you'd rather not be doing. Use the same model that business people use when they hire a personal assistant. Anything that doesn't need to be done by you that can be done by someone else are the things you want to have on your list.
Think of it in the same way you would when you have a family member or friend stay in your home. It’s ideal to have a comfortable bed with nice linen, general furnishings (lamp, workstation, drawers etc). A TV is ideal so your Guest has somewhere to go if they want some alone time. You don't have to provide them with an ensuite. Having a shared bathroom is definitely acceptable. When your Guest arrives, spend some time helping them feel comfortable and settled into your home. Discuss expectations and Xchange requirements. Give each other some time to get used to the Xchange. It usually takes a couple of weeks to work out each others living style.
This is not a short-term stay accommodation solution; it is aimed at mid to long-term stays, with a minimum of one month or longer. However, you and your Guest will decide how long you want your Xchange to be. It could be a couple of months or it could extend for a longer period of time. It could be for a year or more.
Your safety and security is at the forefront of our minds. We have partnered with Digital iD, a product of Australia Post that allows you and Guests to instantly verify who you are directly from our website. We have also partnered with CV Check that allows you to apply for a Police Check online and assuming there are no issues, you'll receive it within 24 hours.
Think of the usual household chores that you do on a daily basis eg laundry, shopping, cooking, basic gardening and household cleaning. If you have children, it may include childcare. You can stipulate what your needs are when you create your profile.
Your basic information is made available to the general public such as first name, location and Xchange requirements. Any personal information such as surname, address, email, phone number DOB etc is not made public.
It's our experience that Guests are so grateful for the opportunity, that they can't do enough for you. However, in the event that doesn't occur, simply have a chat and ask them to be more conscientious. It's helpful to have a list of things you'd like to have done on a daily basis. If they still don't comply, contact us and we'll guide you through the process of ending the Xchange.
